This was the first Perez-Steele art card set. The art emulates the style of the Allen & Ginter set of 1887. Publishing began in 1980 and the set is updated every two years to add new inductees. There are now 253 Hall of Fame members depicted. The sets are numbered and limited to 10,000 sets. The cards are a favorite of autograph collectors and many cards signed by the players are worth well over $200. Some go as high as $500 to $750, and, as published in "Sports Collectors Digest" on December 2, 2000, a signed Satchel Paige is valued at $3,500. These prices are for cards that originally cost the Perez-Steele consumer fifty to seventy-five cents each.
