Published 1983

Al Kaline was a model of consistency, who got the job done with a minimum amount of fanfare. The quiet, durable Tiger outfielder for 22 seasons accumulated 3,007 hits, hit 399 home runs, compiled a career average of .297 and was named to 18 All-Star teams. Kaline won the batting title in 1955, hitting .340 at the age of 20. His reputation as a clutch performer was enhanced by his .379 average against St. Louis in the 1968 World Series.
